Explore view gives you a “top-down” perspective on all your projects. It works like a file system on a computer, but is customized to support laboratory and clinic work.

This page explains how to locate workflows and data using Explore view.

Data Hierarchy

FlowJo Envoy organizes data using a hierarchy. As shown below, each item is contained in the item above it. These relationships go in one direction only. For example, a project can be part of a group but not part of a study.

The screenshot below shows how the data hierarchy is shown in Explore view.

For more detail about each of the items in this view, see Explore View.

For more information on FlowJo Envoy’s file hierarchy, see Data Structure.

Filtering Projects, Studies, and Workflows

Selecting an item filters the items below it in the hierarchy, limiting the items below to those that are part of the selected item.

In the following example, a project is selected, and the studies and workflows shown below it are part of that project.

In the following example, a study is selected.

  • The project turns gray to show the study is part of that project.
  • The Workflows List now shows only workflows that are part of that study. Notice that the workflows listed were also visible in the previous example.

In the following example, a different study is selected that is also part of the same project.

  • The project is still gray, showing we are still seeing studies and workflows that are part of that project.
  • The Workflows List has changed to show only workflows that are part of the newly selected study. Again, notice that the workflows listed were also visible in the first example.

In the following example, the same project is selected again.

  • All selections at lower levels (studies and workflows) are cleared.

All-Projects

Selecting All-Projects turns off filtering while keeping the gray highlight that shows what items the selection is part of.

The following example shows selecting All-Projects clears any existing selection:

In the following example, a study has been selected.

  • In the Projects List, the project with the gray highlight contains the selected study.

In the following example, a different study has been selected.

  • The gray highlight has changed to show which project contains that study.

To turn filtering back on, select a project in the Project List. All-Projects is de-selected.

Filtering Files

The File list filters data files in a similar way to the Project, Study, and Workflow lists. Selecting All-Projects turns off filtering for this list, making all data files in FlowJo Envoy visible.

In the following example, only a project is selected.

  • Studies in the Study list belong to that project.
  • Every file in the File list belongs to that project or a study in that project.

In the following example, a study has been selected.

  • The File list now shows only files belonging to the Require study. Note that all the files listed appeared in the previous example.

In the following example, a different study has been selected.

  • The File list now shows only files belonging to the Design study. Note that all the files listed appeared in the first example.

Selecting Files

As with other selections, selecting a file makes it the subject of the next file operation. For example, if you select Download from the Action menu, the file you last selected is downloaded.

  • To select a file, click to highlight it.
  • To de-select the files, click a workflow in the Workflow list.

Note: When you select files in a file list, whether the file list in Explore view or Workflow Details view, those files become the context of the next operation. For example, while files are selected, projects, studies, workflows, and steps cannot be created, only folders. For more about context, see Importance of Context.

You can only select one file or folder at a time. To perform operations on more than one file at once (such as moving several files to a different workflow):

  1. Move all the files into a folder.
  2. Select the folder, and perform the operation on the folder.
